On Tuesday, July 3rd, 2012

In a report by VisionMobile, the Android operating system is most favored by developers and users around Africa.

Google announced that its operating system, Android has now achieved over 400 million activations worldwide and adds over one million activations every day.

Android has become a leading mobile platform over the years due to its open source nature and ease for developers to create app for the operating system owned by Google.

The report named Developer Economics 2012 outlines how the major mobile platforms are fairing on in this day and age of huge gadget competition.

In Africa the Android platform accounts for 47% of all the developer platforms. Apple’s operating system (iOS) accounts for only 13% in Africa, denoting the lack of widespread use for Apple products in Africa.

The report highlights Kenya’s sale of low end Android phones. “At the same time, almost half of
African developers have adopted Android, reflecting its potential in extremely price-sensitive markets. For example, consider the $80 Huawei IDEOS, an Android phone that has been a sell-out success in Kenya since mid 2011.”

This trend will definitely grow as more cheap Android devices make their way to the continent. Nokia has also been fighting the obvious encroachment of Android developers.

The phone company has held various hackathons in Kenya, to spur developers to create apps for various Nokia brand.  Nokia which uses the Symbian platform has since seen its worldwide market share of phone sales
